Wise Investments

Travel insurance is a wise investment at any time of the year; however, it is especially a good idea during the wintertime. While some travelers may not mind the idea of being snowed in a ski lodge; others, who have paid well in advance for ski lessons, private slope rental, gear rental and other winter sports-related expenses will need a way to recover their lost costs. Moreover, if flights have to be canceled and guests have to scramble to make alternate travel arrangements; there will need to be a way to recover costs associated with any emergency travel plans. Providing more coverage than a credit card’s vacation insurance plan, comprehensive travel insurance policies are a great idea to help protect travelers’ assets and provide them with a way to lessen the impact of a foul weather day.
Even if a destination does not appear to have foul weather, winter sports can have other travel expenses associated with them. Travelers, who do not have medical insurance can purchase a short-term vacation insurance policy that covers any travel-related medical expenses incurred while vacationing. Skiing, bobsledding, ice skating and other winter sports can be dangerous, especially for first-time participants. Having a comprehensive winter sports travel insurance policy and ensuring medical coverage is met, can cover travelers who suffer trip-related damages as well as personal injury expenses.
Ski resorts, lessons and other expenses many times require upfront payment. Even if blizzard conditions, possible avalanches or other weather disasters do not cancel events, a traveler and his or her family members can become ill. Whether eating something that does not agree with a person or developing a cold due to climate change, there needs to be a way to help recoup non-refundable monies. Again, a comprehensive insurance policy is a great way to ensure damages can be recovered.
Before purchasing winter sports travel insurance, examine each plan’s limitations and coverage policies. If traveling with a family, is the entire family covered or does each travel party member need his or her own insurance policy? Examine any deductibles, exclusions and limitations, and select one that will provide the greatest amount of coverage and reimbursement equivalent to your expected expenses. Keep a file of all receipts, expenses and other relevant travel information, as this will need to be submitted when filing a claim. Hopefully, you will not need to; however, having travel-specific insurance will provide that extra peace of mind you need to proceed on with your cold-weather vacation.
