How much money does it take to play the stock market?
I’m particuarly interested in online e-trading. Is this something I can start doing with a few hundred dollars, or do I need more like a few thousand?
I tell people to never “play” in the the stock market. If you don’t know what you are doing, your odds are worse than Vegas.You are gambling.
The min I would open a brokerage account is $2000.00
You just are less likely to make any money trading on small dollar amounts because commissions, even discount broker will increase your trading cost.
I would never trade with odd lot shares (under 100 shares).
I would starting putting $100 or more a month if you can and “Dollar Cost Average” (Google term) into the market (S&P 500 Index) using a Roth IRA (Google term).
In this market you will get wiped out so fast, you will never get back in the market on fears of future loss.

Adrian is incorrect. You cannot buy and sell securities and not pay for them, even if you make a profit before settlement date. This is a SEC violation and is called, “Free Riding.” On 1st offense the account will be restricted for 90 days. Your account could be suspended thereafter. I don’t recall what fines or penalties may occur after that.
