My thoughts are this. Understand one thing first. There are many variables – one being how competitive a market you are in and as a result what your keywords will cost?
I view pay per click this way. Not only am I trying to get sales I am also trying to understand the market I am in. I want to see what keywords they are using, what headlines get the most clickthroughs as I can use them on articles.
So I would set aside a budget and determine this as the cost of doing business with the objective of making a profit. With that said that does not mean I can just waste the money. I start by setting up my campaign with two ads and two landing pages.
My overall budget for this particular campaign maybe $100, so for every $10.00 spent I am going to seriously review the campaign and make changes if necessary. I do monitor the campaign all the time but once I have spent $10.00 I may do a major overhaul. You could also equate this by the number of clicks which is really what you are trying to do. You need enough data so that you don’t change something too early.
This goes right across the board from ads to landing pages to how the merchant site is converting. I generally give the merchant 100 to 200 clicks. If I do not get a conversion from there I cancel that campaign. The point is this I want ten shots to get it right and if it fails after that I will scrap it – unless as I mentioned that the merchant site is not converting. But I am always learning along the way.
My goal for you is to give you some guidelines. When you think these things out you can strategize. If you do not connect move on but that does not mean that you give it a shabby attempt. When you have planned it out there is less fear and it can be fun as you try and beat the challenge. Remember that pay per click delivers up to the minute marketing research. Always be educating yourself and never give up.
