Achieving a shallow depth of field without a 35mm adapter
Step 1:
Set your camera to manual setting (each camera will differ, refer to your camera’s manual).
Step2:
Open your iris(aperture, exposure) all the way.
Step3:
Place your subject (whether it human or and object, etc) as far away from your background in your shot as possible and then pull your camera as far away from the subject as possible.
Step 4:
Zoom in and focus on your subject as much as you can while maintaining your desired composition (may take some time to block the scene this way).
Now you will have a shallow depth of field (how much will vary depending on your camera, how far away the background it, and how much you are zoomed in). Below are a few adjustments you can make if you’re overexposed.
Tricks to compensate for overexposure (cause by open iris):
- Turn on your camera’s ND filter (if equipped)
- Switch to a negative gain (try not to go below -6db)
- Use ND filters (can be attached to your cameras filter threads)
- Tweak the shutter speed to fine tune
